I’d Rather Be Reading

March 7, 2017

When I was a kid I never read books.  The only books that I had at home were library books that I never returned (they’re probably on my credit).  My mom, who herself learned to read at a late age was working all time and was not able to read to me. I managed to graduate from college with a marketing degree but I can’t imagine how much better I would have done if I had read more.  With my girls, I make sure they read daily outside of school work.  Unlike me, Peyton loves to read and owns a ton of books.

Since we’re talking about reading, I’m excited to share the release of “My Brown Baby: On the Joys and Challenges of Raising African American Children” by New York Time best-selling author Denene Millner.  The book is based on a collection of essays from Denene’s award-winning blog, My Brown Baby.  One of the first blogs that I followed when I was pregnant with Peyton was My Brown Baby.  It was refreshing to find an outlet that talked about parenting for black parents.  Some of the topics in the book are self-esteem of black children, embracing your black beauty, why white parents should talk to their kids about race and much more.  You can learn more about “My Brown Baby: On the Joys and Challenges of Raising African American Children” and purchase HERE.

I’m so excited for Denene Millner new release.  It would be a dream to follow in her footsteps one day.

How does your child’s reading differ from your reading experience growing up?

I have two sons….one wants to be an author, he gets his love of reading from me. My other son…well I can’t put a book in his hand. He’s all about numbers.

As soon as I was able to read, that’s all I did. I owned so many books and could not wait to order from Scholastic every month when I saved up some coins to do so!! I still have majority of my books from when I was younger. I would order like the books that came in like a 5 or 6 pack series!! I’m still building up my library to this day. I want a ceiling to floor wall of books. I love P’s look in these pics!
