I Cut {Trimmed} Peyton’s Hair

May 24, 2013
When you know you are having a little girl, all you think about is the pretty dresses and cute bows they are going to wear.  I didn’t think one second about what I would do with Peyton’s hair!  Now she is here and her hair needs to be combed!  I think I have done a pretty decent job with her hair for someone who barely combs their own hair!  Peyton’s hair can be a little challenging.  Curly, kinky and wavy all at the same d*** time!  Peyton’s ends started to look shabby, I knew it was time for a trim.  I hit up my baby hair guru, Baby Big Hair for tips!  She sent me the link to her post about trimming her daughters hair HERE.

The picture above is the “After”.  It was raining all weekend so the frizz and shrinkage was off the chain!  I think her hair looks healthy.

The back of Peyton’s hair is long and wavy!  Totally different from the rest of her head.  She has a fro mullet.  I don’t want to chop it off so I pin it up or stick it in her headband to try blend it.

With her hair damp, I grabbed about a one inch section of her hair.  I did a “light” twist and stretched it out.  I used sheers to clip the ends that looked shabby.

I was very conservative on this trim since it was my first time.  I cut between 1/4th to a half inch at the most.
After I was done, I twisted Peyton’s hair using Shea Moisture Curl Enhancing Smoothie.  I usually use 4Naturals Afro Stretch Curl Cream for her twist.  While the Shea Moisture provides… moisture, the 4Naturals gives her curls more definition.

I can clearly tell the difference clipping her ends made!  Normally her ends are frizzy looking.  They would  never curl up like in this picture above.  I plan to revisit her ends every 3-4 months.  Have you ever trimmed your child’s hair?  How old were they?  Did you do it yourself or take them to a professional?

Looking good! That is the thing with daughters!
I plan to trim my daughter’s hair similarly myself soon too. I previously took her to my stylist, but she likes to straighten hair with a flat iron prior to trimming and my daughter’s hair is just too soft and easily heat damaged for that technique. Some of her hair wouldn’t curl for months after the last time.
My hair is the exact opposite of your daughter’s! The hair in back is super curly and the hair in front and on my crown is just wavy (at it’s current length, it was curlier when I had a bob).

Looks good I take mines to the shop with me and they trim for free. I don’t do any hair I might get scissor happy and want to do a style.

I love that 4Natural stretch cream. I get so much definition in Addison’s twists when I use it. I did Addison’s a few months ago and the difference was noticeable immediately.

I have pretty much been a loyal buyer of honest diapers from day one, but have tried expensive diapers on occasion, only to come back to these. They are the better deal and don’t fall apart. I have had tabs rip off on Huggies while attaching them to my kids. I like the expensive diapers best.

I trim my daughter’s hair too! I use the same steps that you do. I think I’m going to get some different shears but other than that I’m happy with how things are turning out. I’m not ready for her to go to a beauty salon just yet. Peyton’s hair looks great, you did a great job!

    Hi,
I must say you daughter’s hair is beautiful. I’m despratly in need of some advice for my baby girls’s hair. she turned one after which I cut her hair cos it was falling off. she has a very coarse and shrinking african hair. what can I do to make her hair softer and strechy, mostly I need her hair to grow as it seems not to grow.

    would really appreciate your advice.

Condition after each shampoo! Most parents don’t think to condition their childs hair. Leave it on for a few minutes before rinsing.

I’m not sure if there is anything to make it grow faster. Just make sure to keep her hair washed/ conditioned and moisturized. Make sure she takes her vitamins. Same things you would do for yourself. At there young age sometimes it could be fast or it can catch up to them later. We just have to do the best we can : ). I have another post about what I have learned about moisture.

First time, when Layla was 4 I took her to a “curl specialist” to trim her locks. After seeing what she did, I now trim on my own. Curl.by.curl!!!!! 🙂 Thanks for those additional links….going to check them out!
